On February 12, Sharp disclosed that its agreement with parent company Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. (Foxconn) to sell the second liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacturing facility in Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture, Japan, had collapsed. Citing the sluggish LCD panel market and subdued prices, Foxconn decided to back out of the acquisition. This development will necessitate Sharp to recalibrate its production strategies and acknowledge financial setbacks. Sharp intends to cease operations at the plant in August, providing voluntary redundancy packages to 1,170 staff members. The company anticipates incurring a restructuring cost of 10 billion yen in the current fiscal year, with an additional 2 billion yen expected in the following fiscal year.
