Recent reports reveal that Apple is in the process of evaluating more robust display film technologies for its inaugural foldable iPhone, with the goal of bolstering screen durability and enhancing the tactile experience, thereby establishing a unique competitive edge. Presently, Apple is experimenting with two protective film options: PET and CPI. These films will be applied atop an ultra-thin glass substrate. While Samsung has already opted for PET film, Apple is conducting a thorough assessment of CPI film, likely attracted by its superior surface hardness and resistance to scratches. Although this choice entails higher costs, it is consistent with Apple’s commitment to delivering top-tier product quality. South Korea’s Kolon Industry is poised to emerge as a potential supplier of CPI film, while China’s Lens Technology is expected to supply the ultra-thin glass and manage the lamination procedure. Industry experts suggest that Apple’s decision to opt for CPI film aligns with its strategy of ‘differentiation competition’. This move could potentially address concerns regarding screen durability and reinforce Apple’s dominant position in the premium market segment.
