Microsoft had previously stated its intention to introduce APIs in Windows 11 that would facilitate the integration of password manager software. Recently, at the November 2025 Patch Tuesday event, Microsoft officially released an update that offers native support for third-party passkey managers, including 1Password and Bitwarden. After updating the 1Password desktop application to the latest MSIX version, the system will seamlessly guide users through the integration steps. Users also have the option to manually configure 1Password as the system authenticator in the settings menu. Once this setup is complete, passkeys stored in 1Password can be automatically synchronized for logging into a variety of applications and websites, thus removing the necessity for browser extensions. The native integration capability for Bitwarden is presently undergoing beta testing. Users are required to download a specific version from the official GitHub repository, with plans to incorporate it into the standard desktop app at a later date. This update also bolsters security, as all operations are safeguarded by the password manager's PIN code, and are further reinforced by Azure's hardware security modules and confidential computing technology.
