Google has rolled out new application quality standards designed to tackle the problem of apps consuming excessive battery power. The updated policy zeroes in on the 'wake lock' mechanism, since numerous apps tend to hold wake locks for prolonged durations without any valid cause, resulting in abnormal battery drain. These new rules are set to come into force on March 1, 2026, establishing specific quantitative criteria for excessive power consumption on both mobile phones and wearable gadgets. Regarding apps that fail to meet these standards, Google will affix warning labels to their detail pages on the Play Store and diminish their prominence in recommended sections and rankings.
