According to industry insiders, Apple is currently working on its own LOFIC image sensor, with plans to debut it in the special 20th-anniversary edition iPhone set for release in 2027. LOFIC, short for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor technology, allows camera pixels to automatically adapt their capacity according to light levels. This innovation significantly broadens the dynamic range, capturing richer details in photos. Presently, Chinese smartphone makers are leading the charge in this field. Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei are slated to incorporate Sony’s latest LOFIC sensor into their flagship devices in 2026. Meanwhile, OPPO and Vivo are also developing models featuring similar technology. Apple, not to be left behind, is expected to join the fray in 2027. The tech giant filed a patent for a related image sensor as early as July 2025 and has already created a technical prototype, which is likely undergoing rigorous hardware testing. Given these developments and accompanying rumors, the 20th-anniversary iPhone is anticipated to showcase a revolutionary design. Paired with advancements in its imaging system, it is poised to become a milestone product in Apple’s history.
