On October 21, 2025, reports surfaced indicating that the budget-friendly thermal grease SGT-4 (4 grams, priced at approximately $7), produced by South Korean manufacturer Amech and previously favored by cost-conscious consumers, has now earned the ominous moniker of a "hardware assassin." Over a year ago, German hardware analyst Igor Wallossek, through meticulous chemical analysis, uncovered that the blend of PDMS and condensation-reaction-type RTV silicone in this product emits acetic acid during the curing process, which can subsequently lead to hardware corrosion. Recent user feedback has corroborated these findings, with numerous individuals sharing images of their damaged hardware on South Korea's Quasarzone forum. The photos reveal severe corrosion of the heat sink and etching on CPU labels. In response to skepticism (replacing "the question" with a more contextually appropriate term), Amech simply stated that the product adheres to RoHS and REACH certifications. However, these certifications do not inherently guarantee that the product is non-corrosive.
