Apple's newest wireless earbuds, the AirPods Pro 3, come with an integrated heart rate sensor. This sensor can measure heart rate by assessing the state of subcutaneous blood vessels during a user's workout. This functionality is grounded in photoplethysmography (PPG) technology. It employs built-in LED optical sensors to emit 256 infrared light pulses per second, capturing fluctuations in blood flow. It then relies on the iPhone's AI model to carry out heart rate data calculations. At present, the AirPods Pro 3 can be pre-ordered and are set to be officially launched by the end of this week.

Apple noted in its most recent support documentation that the AirPods Pro 3 utilizes an acoustic seal test to verify the fit of the ear tips. By detecting the fit between the ear tip and the ear canal, it ensures users select the most suitable ear tip size, thus achieving optimal sound quality and noise cancellation. Apple advises users to start with the medium-sized ear tips. If the seal is insufficient, they should switch to a larger size; if the fit feels too tight, they should opt for a smaller size.

Moreover, the ear tip size that is ideal for acoustic sealing might not necessarily be the best choice for heart rate monitoring. Apple recommends that when using the heart rate monitoring feature, users should wear the earbuds at an approximate 45-degree angle toward the face to obtain more accurate heart rate data.
