Apple has officially launched the application process for its 2026 Security Research Device (SRD) program, extending an invitation to seasoned security researchers to join in. Those who are selected for the program will be provided with an unlocked iPhone, enabling them to conduct lawful tests on iOS security. Substantial rewards, reaching up to $500,000, are on offer for the discovery of vulnerabilities.
The SRD program offers a unique version of the iPhone. This special edition iPhone looks just like the standard model, but with all system limitations lifted. This allows experts to thoroughly examine the core system within a secure and controlled setting.
The application window will open in September 2025 and conclude on October 31 of the same year. It's important to note that the device can solely be utilized at designated research institutions and is not intended for everyday personal use.
Candidates for the program are required to possess a proven track record in identifying security vulnerabilities, be of legal adult age, and not be current Apple employees or individuals listed on government restriction lists.
The usage period for the device is set at one year, with the possibility of renewal. However, the ownership of the device always remains with Apple.
