In Seymour, Indiana, Guardian Bikes is reinvigorating local production of children's bicycles within a sprawling 540,000-square-foot factory. This company boasts an impressive manufacturing feat in the U.S., producing approximately 12,000 bicycles per week. However, over the past four decades, numerous American factories have shuttered their doors due to the lure of cheap labor and extensive supplier networks overseas. This exodus has resulted in a significant decline in the number of American manufacturing enterprises and factories. Guardian Bikes, which once relied on Chinese OEMs, faced transportation delays and quality concerns, prompting it to establish a factory in the Midwest in 2022. While automated production, low inventory costs, and tariff policies help mitigate higher costs, building a domestic supply chain presents its own set of challenges.
