A recent claim by a blogger that users could restore expired WeChat files, images, or videos by adjusting their phone's date has been categorically dismissed by WeChat staff as utterly false. WeChat emphasizes that it does not determine the validity of files based on the local time settings of a user's device, meaning expired files cannot be revived through such a method. Furthermore, the company clarifies that the expiration period for images, videos, and files shared within chats is set at 14 days. Attempting to manipulate the phone's date could also result in disarray within file organization, making it an unadvisable course of action. Prior to this, rumors about retrieving expired WeChat images also gained traction, but Tencent employees have clarified that once an image expires without being received, only a thumbnail is retained, with the actual file irretrievable.
