West China Hospital, Sichuan University, has successfully pioneered the first implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) surgery in western China. The groundbreaking procedure was performed on a patient who had sustained spinal cord injury and resultant quadriplegia in a car accident. Through a minimally invasive approach, the BCI device was implanted outside the dura mater of the brain. This sophisticated device captures brain electrical signals via a wireless power supply and high-sensitivity electrode arrays, facilitating brain-controlled robotic hands and re-establishing a vital connection between the brain and the external world.

This cutting-edge technology has undergone rigorous clinical trials, with the longest implantation period exceeding 21 months. Currently, multi-center registration trials are underway, offering fresh hope for the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries and paving the way for future advancements in neuroprosthetics.
