In an interview, Wang Puzhong, the CEO of Meituan's core local services business, underscored that the current state of competition within the food delivery market has devolved into an irrational phase. Reacting to Alibaba's announcement of a RMB 50 billion subsidy program, Wang observed that Alibaba might harbor the belief that lavish subsidies could coerce Meituan into retreat. The e-commerce giant, with its substantial profits, aims to surpass Meituan in terms of order volume. Nonetheless, Wang Puzhong underscored that Meituan not only possesses the capacity to respond but also does so with significantly fewer resources than Alibaba. Additionally, he disclosed that according to Meituan's internal statistics, Ele.me has incurred cumulative losses exceeding RMB 150 billion. Commenting on Alibaba's new subsidy strategy, Wang Puzhong analogized it to "purchasing more chips to persist in gambling after losing three consecutive hands in Texas Hold'em."
