Vietnam boasts a staggering number of over 60 million motorcycles, averaging one bike for every two individuals, positioning it as one of the world's most motorcycle-dependent nations for transportation. In a bid to combat air pollution, the Vietnamese government has recently announced a ban on the use of fossil fuel-powered motorcycles and scooters within the downtown area of Hanoi, the nation's capital, effective July 1, 2026. This initiative is integral to Hanoi's comprehensive air pollution control strategy. The downtown district, which houses the bulk of the city's commercial activities, has witnessed a rising severity of traffic-induced air pollution, catapulting it into the ranks of the world's most polluted cities. Consequently, the Vietnamese government has introduced this ban with the aim of significantly enhancing air quality in the region.
