Hungary and Slovakia have jointly exercised their veto power at the EU Energy Ministers Council against a proposal aimed at accelerating the termination of imports of Russian energy. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó underscored that this decision is rooted in the prevention of potential risks to national energy security, reaffirming that energy policy is an integral part of national sovereignty. He further emphasized that unilaterally terminating gas contracts with Russia could lead to unforeseen financial liabilities and penalties. Consequently, Hungary advocates for the EU to withdraw the proposal, instead prioritizing an assessment of the impact of the Middle East situation on Europe, and devising appropriate countermeasures accordingly.
