Scientific researchers from around the globe have unveiled the world's first fossil evidence of Ophiocordyceps fungi parasitizing ant larvae. This groundbreaking discovery stems from the examination of fossils of ants and flies infected with Ophiocordyceps. Studies indicate that Ophiocordyceps dates back to the early Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago, pushing back its origin by about 30 million years compared to previous estimations. Additionally, these fossils reveal that ancient ants already exhibited complex social behaviors, including the care of larvae and measures to prevent group infections. This revelation offers pivotal insights into the co-evolutionary dynamics between fungi and insects.
