Mozilla has announced that it will officially discontinue the AI assistant extension, Orbit, for Firefox browsers on June 26, 2025. Launched in beta testing in January of this year, Orbit's run lasted just over six months. The extension offered a range of features, including summarizing most webpage texts and video content with subtitles, and featured an integrated chatbot that allowed users to ask questions about page content. Users also had the flexibility to customize the format of the summaries. However, with the introduction of the Firefox sidebar feature, which provides seamless access to popular AIs like ChatGPT and Gemini, Mozilla believes maintaining a dedicated Orbit plugin is no longer essential.

Many of Orbit's functionalities, such as preset prompts accessible via the webpage's right-click menu, have been natively integrated into Firefox. It's noteworthy that Orbit's privacy protection features have not been carried over, and Firefox will instead rely on third-party AI infrastructure. Nonetheless, Mozilla has affirmed its commitment to continuing the direct integration of AI technology into browsers, aiming to reach a wider audience with these advancements.
