November 5 news: India plans to require power distributors to purchase a certain scale of energy storage capacity alongside renewable energy procurement, in order to reduce curtailment of clean power. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of India's Ministry of Power, said on Thursday that policy details are still under discussion, including the scale of energy storage capacity that distributors will need to procure, and that the government plans to finalize the relevant regulations before March next year. The mandatory requirement aims to boost investment in battery energy storage so that surplus power can be stored and released when supply tightens. Solar power generation typically peaks during the day, while wind power fluctuates with weather conditions, causing the grid to sometimes have surplus power and sometimes insufficient supply. If energy storage capacity is insufficient, grid operators may be forced to curtail renewable energy generation.
