On August 31, Google completed adjustments to the Chrome Web Store by removing all remaining Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions. Starting September 1, users will no longer be able to search for or install these extensions through the store, even if some browsers still support MV2 extensions. For example, the well-known ad-blocking extension uBlock Origin is now inaccessible. Currently, only the Brave browser retains four MV2 extensions, including AdGuard and uBlock Origin, on its proprietary backend. Google is advancing the migration of extensions from MV2 to Manifest V3 (MV3) to restructure the permission, network interception, and background execution models, thereby reducing the risks of malicious extensions and data misuse while minimizing the impact on browser performance. While MV2 offers high flexibility, its overly broad permissions and resource-intensive nature have been optimized in MV3. Additionally, Google has outlined the timeline for MV2's phase-out: starting from January 2022, the store no longer accepted new MV2 extensions; in 2023, the retirement plan was adjusted based on ecosystem feedback; in November of the same year, a revised phase-out schedule was announced; from June 2024, users were warned in stages, and MV2 extensions were disabled in the stable version starting in October; from the second half of 2024 to 2025, more stable version users will be covered in batches, while enterprise users can be exempted through policies until June 2025. Chrome 138 will be the last version to support MV2. By August 31, 2026, the store will remove all remaining MV2 extensions, and installed extensions will no longer be updatable or reinstallable. Chrome 139 will completely remove the enterprise exemption policy, marking the end of MV2 compatibility.
