NASA's X-59 supersonic experimental aircraft is poised to undertake its inaugural supersonic test flight. Featuring a slender, aerodynamic design, this aircraft is engineered to mitigate the intensity of sonic booms, pioneering the realm of 'quiet supersonic' flight technology. Its primary objective is to minimize the ground-level impact of sonic booms, potentially paving the way for the relaxation of current supersonic flight restrictions. The X-59 embarked on its maiden voyage in October 2025 and has since accumulated 14 test flights since March 2026, achieving speeds surpassing 0.95 Mach. Notably, it has executed dual-sortie test flights within a single day and undergone landing gear retraction and extension trials. Notably, the aircraft eschews a conventional front windshield, opting instead for an External Vision System (XVS) to furnish the pilot with a forward perspective.

Presently, the X-59 is engaged in the inaugural phase of test flights, focusing on validating fundamental low-speed performance metrics. Following the successful completion of its first supersonic test flight, plans are underway to commence the second phase of test flights in the latter half of 2026. This phase aims to gauge the perceived intensity of sonic booms on the ground during supersonic overland flight and further refine noise reduction technologies.

Since 1973, U.S. legislation has barred supersonic aircraft from operating at supersonic speeds over land at low altitudes. NASA aspires to utilize the innovative technologies embedded in the X-59 to advocate for the repeal of this prohibition, thereby opening doors to the revival of commercial supersonic air routes. In addition to NASA's endeavors, private entities like Boom Supersonic are also in the process of developing low-noise supersonic aircraft models. Their test aircraft successfully completed supersonic test flights last year, marking a historic milestone as the first civilian aircraft to achieve supersonic flight within U.S. domestic airspace.
