Airlines are now grappling with a fresh flight safety concern: portable mobile power banks. These lithium-ion battery-powered gadgets, favored by travelers for keeping their smartphones and other electronic devices charged while on the move, have also emerged as a significant source of cabin fires. The number of safety incidents they cause far outstrips those triggered by other rechargeable electronic devices. In 2025 alone, there have been 15 instances of power banks catching fire or emitting smoke on flights operated by Chinese carriers. An IndiGo Airlines flight in India was also forced to urgently evacuate passengers after a mobile power bank caught fire.

Power banks that are unqualified, with unstable batteries and lacking in protective measures, are particularly susceptible to safety issues during air transport. This susceptibility stems from internal defects, improper usage, or alterations in the flight environment. In light of these risks, the Civil Aviation Administration has swiftly issued an urgent notice. This notice prohibits passengers from bringing power banks on board that lack 3C certification, have unclear labeling, or have been subject to recalls. Additionally, it mandates airlines to ramp up publicity efforts, conduct rigorous inspections, and enhance services to safeguard aviation safety.
