At the 2026 China Chain Catering Summit, Peng Jianzhen, who serves as the President of the China Chain Operation Association, gave a keynote speech. In his speech, he urged platforms to put an end to large-scale subsidies. He highlighted that the 'takeout wars' and price competition that took place last year, although providing short-term benefits to consumers, have, in the long haul, weakened the industry's ability to innovate and its very foundation for survival. Data from Meituan reveals that in 2025, 3.39 million merchants closed down, marking a year-on-year increase of 9.4%. Nearly two-thirds of these merchants had been in operation for less than two years, a clear sign of the intensifying industry reshuffle. Peng Jianzhen is of the opinion that large-scale platform subsidies have thrown the catering industry into disarray, hindering its healthy expansion in terms of scale. He, therefore, calls on the industry to revert to rational competition and foster high-quality development.
