The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is expected to approve a rule revision this month to relax power limits on satellite spectrum use, a move that will significantly boost the development of space-based broadband services like SpaceX's Starlink. The FCC announced on Wednesday that it will vote on April 30 on a measure allowing for broader and more intensive use of wireless spectrum for space activities, a move expected to generate $2 billion in economic benefits through increased broadband usage. SpaceX submitted a petition in August 2024 seeking the rule change. The company told the FCC last month that current rules impose excessive restrictions on next-generation satellite systems, creating unnecessary constraints and harming the interests of millions of consumers who rely on these systems for high-speed broadband services.
