Microsoft has recently suspended the long-established developer accounts associated with the renowned open-source projects WireGuard and VeraCrypt, without providing clear reasons. This move has led to a halt in updates for these two security tools on the Windows platform. VeraCrypt developer Mounir Idrassi revealed that Microsoft abruptly terminated his signing account in mid-January, offering no prior warning or explanation, and merely sent a rejection letter. As a result, the Windows version of VeraCrypt remains stuck at its October 2024 iteration, with security patches and new features unable to be rolled out. Similarly, WireGuard founder Jason Donenfeld recounted a comparable experience, noting that his account was suspended without any forewarning. These incidents have sparked speculation that Microsoft may be undertaking a large-scale cleanup of developer accounts, prompting concerns within the open-source community regarding the risks of platform dependency.
