On Tuesday local time, a jury in New Mexico, USA, ruled that Meta must pay $375 million in civil damages. The New Mexico Attorney General accused Meta, as the operator of Facebook and Instagram, of failing to protect children using its apps from child sex offenders. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torres filed a lawsuit against Meta in 2023 after conducting an undercover investigation in which he created a fake account for a 13-year-old girl and discovered that the account was flooded with images and targeted harassment messages from pedophiles. A Meta spokesperson expressed disagreement with the verdict and stated that the company will appeal.
