On March 20, according to sources familiar with the matter, NASA is adjusting its lunar landing plan by reducing Boeing's involvement and elevating the role of SpaceX's Starship rocket, which will be responsible for transporting astronauts into lunar orbit. Under the original plan, Boeing's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket was set to carry four astronauts aboard Lockheed Martin's Orion spacecraft to the Moon. After the spacecraft entered lunar orbit on its own, it would rendezvous and dock with the Starship lander, which would then transport the astronauts to the lunar surface. Under the new proposal, the SLS will no longer be responsible for delivering the Orion to the vicinity of the Moon. Instead, the Starship will dock with the Orion in Earth orbit and undertake the tasks of propelling the spacecraft to lunar orbit and delivering the astronauts to the lunar surface.
