On February 3, the Spanish government made a groundbreaking announcement: it is set to champion legislation aimed at prohibiting individuals under the age of 16 from engaging with social media platforms. Additionally, these platforms will be mandated to implement rigorous age verification systems. This proactive step is designed to shield children from the detrimental impacts of hate speech, explicit pornographic material, and misleading information, thereby fostering a more secure digital environment. The proposed measure has found its place within the draft of the 'Law on the Protection of Minors in the Online Environment.' Furthermore, a fresh legislative proposal is slated for submission next week, outlining the precise legal obligations that platforms must adhere to. Spain has taken inspiration, in part, from Australia's approach, which had previously enacted a comparable ban, set to take effect from December 2025.
