On Tuesday, India's Supreme Court sounded an alarm, indicating that it might once again prohibit Meta-owned WhatsApp from sharing user data with other entities within the Meta group. This move comes in the wake of allegations from two lawyers who represented the case in court, claiming that WhatsApp's privacy policy had misled its users. WhatsApp has found itself entangled in a legal battle with India's antitrust authority since November 2024. During that month, the antitrust body slapped WhatsApp with a hefty fine of $25.4 million and barred it from sharing user data with other Meta-linked entities for advertising uses over a five-year period. While an appellate court subsequently overturned the data-sharing ban, it did uphold the fine, prompting both sides to escalate the dispute to the Supreme Court.
