A groundbreaking non-invasive diagnostic technology, co-developed by a collaborative team that includes the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, can precisely diagnose diabetic cataracts in a mere 30 seconds, utilizing just a 10-nanoliter sample of tear fluid. The pertinent research findings have been published in the esteemed journal Nature Communications.

At present, the clinical diagnosis of diabetic cataracts is prone to instances of missed diagnoses. While tear fluid harbors molecular clues about various diseases, traditional detection methods often fall short when it comes to conducting high-throughput testing on tear fluid samples. To address this challenge, the research team engineered the NELDI-MS platform. This innovative platform significantly boosts the signal response for metabolite detection and has led to the development of a diagnostic model that integrates three pivotal metabolic markers.

Furthermore, the study unveiled that a decline in 1,5-anhydroglucitol levels might play a pivotal role in the onset of diabetic cataracts. The NELDI-MS method presents substantial advantages and holds great promise as a routine screening tool in ophthalmology clinics.
