If you were asked which Microsoft software is the most difficult to replace, the answer might not be the Windows operating system, but rather the Office suite. For a long time, both individuals and enterprises have heavily depended on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (PPT), making the task of replacing them an incredibly daunting challenge.
As early as 2018, Airbus declared that its 130,000 employees would make a complete switch to the Google Cloud office platform, thereby replacing Microsoft Office. However, seven years have elapsed, and this transformation is yet to be fully realized. At present, two-thirds of Airbus's workforce have completed the migration process. Nevertheless, the remaining employees still exhibit a high degree of reliance on Office. For instance, the financial system cannot do away with Excel since Google Sheets is incapable of handling extremely large files. Some spreadsheet files contain over 20 million cells. Moreover, the business, procurement, and legal teams have a pressing need for robust contract change-tracking features, which Google's software has not yet fully supported. It is anticipated that 100% compatibility will not be achieved until 2026. In the meantime, due to regulatory constraints, certain files cannot be stored in the cloud and must be saved using the local Office software. This is also one of the reasons why the transformation has not been completed.
