On the morning of October 28, 2025 (local time), NASA's newly developed X - 59 Quiet Supersonic Demonstrator accomplished its inaugural test flight with remarkable success at the U.S. Air Force Plant 42, located in Palmdale, California. This aircraft, which was crafted by Lockheed Martin, boasts a distinctive design. It is capable of breaking the sound barrier with a mere “soft thump” instead of the typical deafening roar. The primary objective behind this design is to minimize noise pollution and pave the way for the future advancement of commercial supersonic aircraft. When in cruise mode, the X - 59 will soar at an altitude of 55,000 feet (roughly 16,764 meters), which is almost double the altitude of conventional passenger aircraft.
