On October 24, 2025, at the China International Petroleum & Petrochemical Conference, Sinopec and BASF declared that they had arrived at a consensus regarding the fundamental requirements of carbon footprint accounting methods. This achievement marks a framework-level mutual acknowledgment of the respective methodologies. Earlier, in 2023, Sinopec pioneered the automation of carbon footprint accounting for petrochemical products in China. Then, in 2024, it teamed up with seven enterprises, such as China National Petroleum Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation, to form the first carbon footprint alliance for the energy and chemical industry supply chain. This alliance is dedicated to fostering coordinated carbon reduction efforts throughout the supply chain.
