On October 21, Bloomberg reported that Sean Duffy, the acting head of NASA, voiced concerns over the delayed research and development timeline of SpaceX's Starship spacecraft project, which is led by Elon Musk. This delay has prompted NASA to consider opening up the existing lunar landing contract to competition from other companies. Duffy elaborated that NASA intends to reopen the contract bidding process among U.S. firms to determine which entity can first accomplish the feat of returning astronauts to the Moon. He noted that NASA had initially earmarked SpaceX's Starship spacecraft for the 2027 lunar landing mission, but industry insiders are now questioning whether the spacecraft will be ready in time. Furthermore, in 2023, NASA also awarded a second lunar lander development contract, valued at $3.4 billion, to Blue Origin.
