On September 8, the 'VM160' air compressor, a domestically produced innovation designed specifically for pumped-storage power stations, achieved a significant milestone. Installed in the second-phase project of the Guangdong Meixu Pumped-Storage Power Station, it successfully underwent a scientific and technological achievement appraisal in Guangzhou, demonstrating that its overall technology has reached an internationally advanced level. This achievement signifies the successful commissioning of China's inaugural air compressor tailored for pumped-storage power stations, effectively breaking the long-standing foreign technological monopoly in this field.
Previously, China's market for air compressors in pumped-storage power stations was heavily reliant on foreign imports, which brought about numerous challenges and issues. In June 2021, a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid Storage, in partnership with other enterprises, embarked on a research and development endeavor. They opted for the 'medium-pressure oil-free' technical route and pioneered the application of the 'coaxial direct-drive integrated architecture', successfully developing a three-stage compression unit independently.
In November 2024, the air compressor was installed and put into operation in two pumped-storage projects. Alongside this, an intelligent operational diagnosis system and a coordinated control system for the power station were also developed. When compared to imported products of the same model, this air compressor boasts superior key performance indicators. Over a 30-year service life, it is projected to generate economic benefits of up to 81 million yuan.
With the accelerated development of China's pumped-storage industry anticipated by 2030, this air compressor is poised to deliver substantial economic and environmental benefits. Its market prospects are vast, offering a promising future for China's energy sector.
