In a groundbreaking collaboration, Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape region of South Africa have jointly announced the successful completion of the nation's inaugural robotic-assisted donor nephrectomy. A selfless act of love saw a 45-year-old mother donate a kidney to her 24-year-old daughter, with the intricate procedure performed by a team comprising two expert groups.
During the surgery, highly skilled urologists utilized a state-of-the-art robotic platform to manipulate four precision mechanical arms, ensuring meticulous accuracy in the removal of the kidney. This innovative approach not only reduced the duration of the operation to under 90 minutes but also minimized the surgical incision, lessened post-operative discomfort, and significantly accelerated the patient's recovery process.
