In the current landscape, where numerous firms are integrating generative AI technology into diverse products, the browser realm is no stranger to this trend. Companies such as Opera, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla are actively exploring the synergy between AI and browsers. Nevertheless, Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder and CEO of Vivaldi, made a bold declaration on the company's blog. He stated that Vivaldi would steadfastly refuse to join this bandwagon and would uphold the principle of "human-centric browsing." Von Tetzchner contends that browsing is an intrinsically active endeavor, and the integration of AI browsers effectively transforms this active exploration into passive observation.

He specifically highlighted Google's Gemini "Copilot Mode" in Chrome and Microsoft Edge as quintessential examples of this trend and cautioned against the inherent risks. He warned that users might become overly reliant on AI intermediaries to interpret knowledge, potentially sparking disputes over information control and corporate profit models. While Vivaldi acknowledges that not all AI applications are detrimental and recognizes the vast potential in machine learning, the company has pledged not to introduce features like LLM chatbots, webpage summaries, or AI form filling until a more balanced and user-friendly solution emerges.
