In a recent ruling, a court in Frankfurt, Germany, determined that Apple's Apple Watch sold in the country cannot be accurately labeled as a carbon-neutral product. Consequently, the court prohibited Apple from using this claim in its marketing materials. Since September 2023, Apple had been asserting that the Apple Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2, and subsequent models were carbon-neutral. According to Apple, the carbon footprint of each Apple Watch amounts to approximately 8 kilograms of carbon dioxide, marking a reduction of roughly 80% compared to 2015 levels. The company achieved this reduction through various emission-lowering strategies and attained net-zero emissions by purchasing carbon credits. However, German environmentalists contested this claim, arguing that Apple was misleading consumers. The German court concurred with this viewpoint, although it did not elaborate on the specific legal rationale behind its decision. The German Environmental Aid Association hailed the ruling as a significant victory against "greenwashing" practices.
