In July, the U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) surged 0.9% month-over-month, recording the largest monthly increase in three years. This uptick was primarily fueled by a 1.1% rise in the services price index. Furthermore, the core PPI witnessed a year-over-year jump of 3.7%. Concurrently, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has also exceeded the Federal Reserve's target. A Goldman Sachs report highlights that while U.S. businesses are currently shouldering the bulk of tariff costs, a persistent escalation in tariffs would inevitably shift a heavier burden onto consumers. Economists caution that these tariff policies are stoking inflation, jeopardizing the financial stability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and increasing the likelihood of a recession to as high as 90%.
