On Thursday, the director of Norway's intelligence service revealed that the dam at Risevatnet Lake, situated near the city of Bremanger in western Norway, was subjected to a cyberattack by Russian hackers in early April 2025. For a period of four hours, the hackers remotely gained control over the dam's operational system, fully opening the outlet valves, leading to the release of millions of gallons of water – an amount comparable to the capacity of three Olympic-sized swimming pools. Fortunately, no safety incidents such as flooding materialized; nevertheless, the incident has garnered significant attention from relevant Norwegian authorities, who have stepped in to conduct an investigation. Preliminary analysis suggests that the hackers may have exploited vulnerabilities stemming from weak passwords on the dam's web-based control interface to execute their intrusion.
