Microsoft has expedited the development of its data centers, leading to a nearly 25% surge in carbon emissions since 2020, primarily fueled by the burgeoning demand for AI and cloud services. Despite the company's aspiration to attain carbon-negative emissions by 2030, the expansion of its data centers has notably increased its carbon footprint. Although the rise in carbon emissions has been deemed "moderate" in comparison to a 168% increase in energy consumption and a 71% surge in revenue, it still undermines Microsoft's previous commitments. The tech giant has affirmed its commitment to fostering the scalable growth of the carbon-free electricity market and investing in decarbonization initiatives within the construction materials and fuels essential for data center construction.
