US stocks closed sharply lower on Thursday, November 6, as investors grew concerned about a slowdown in data center construction and accelerated their retreat from technology stocks. The Nasdaq fell 5.52%, slipping into correction territory; the S&P 500 dropped 4.36%; and the Dow declined 3.44%. All three major indices recorded their largest single-day losses since April 2025. Earlier, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent progressive voice aligned with Democratic positions, called for a national moratorium on data center construction. On Wednesday night, Sanders posted that Americans do not want large technology oligopolies to harm the environment, cut jobs, and threaten humanity's future. Tim Holland, Chief Investment Officer at Orion, said investors are watching and waiting for a clearer picture of how election results will affect the AI capital expenditure cycle—a cycle that has been the biggest tailwind for economic growth over the past three years. He added that what matters now is the tone and stance of the party that secured notable victories at both the federal and state levels.
