November 4 — Qualcomm will supply hardware components for SpaceX's planned nationwide terrestrial wireless communications network in the United States, marking the official entry of Musk's rocket and satellite company into the U.S. mobile communications market to challenge major carriers. Qualcomm said SpaceX will use its Dragonwing series components for base station deployment to support calls and data transmission, and will use some of Qualcomm's proprietary software as the network's core control system. The two companies have signed a multi-year agreement under which Qualcomm will build tens of thousands of base stations for its 5G network, with deployment set to begin next year. Qualcomm Executive Vice President Durga Malladi said the scale of the base stations will be comparable to the existing deployments of major U.S. wireless carriers, adding that SpaceX is very committed and serious about the plan and that Qualcomm has extremely high confidence in it.
