Cloudflare, a web service provider, has announced its plan to become a public certificate authority (CA) for the internet, assisting websites in issuing digital certificates for HTTPS encryption and authentication. Currently, the plan is in the stages of root certificate application, infrastructure construction, and compliance review, and certificate issuance has not yet commenced. Cloudflare has applied to join the root certificate programs of Chrome, Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla, and has signed an agreement with GlobalSign to acquire root certificates to expand its certificate coverage. Additionally, Cloudflare plans to offer a free automated certificate service that supports the ACME interface and intends to issue production-grade Merkle Tree Certificates (MTCs) in the first quarter of 2027 to address the challenges of post-quantum cryptography.
