On September 17, Google announced a collaboration with Swedish steel company Stegra to support the launch of its green hydrogen-based, near-zero emission steel plant in Boden, Sweden. Stegra will utilize renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, replacing coal in the processing of iron ore. Under the agreement, Google will acquire environmental attribute certificates for up to 91,000 tons of steel produced by Stegra in its first year. Google plans to use low-carbon steel in data center construction, expecting to reduce embodied carbon emissions by up to 40%.
