In a strategic move to diminish dependence on multinational tech giants and bolster digital independence, the Swiss public administration has initiated a pilot project. This project is designed to systematically phase out the use of Microsoft 365, transitioning instead to a localized, open-source office collaboration software ecosystem that offers greater control and security. Officials responsible for data protection in Switzerland have highlighted concerns regarding international public cloud services, such as Microsoft 365. They note that these services do not provide genuine end-to-end encryption and fall under the purview of the US CLOUD Act. This situation raises the risk of foreign laws being applied extraterritorially, thereby compromising the nation's data sovereignty.
