On May 28, reports indicated that the concept of space computing power has been steadily gaining traction throughout this year. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced its commitment to bolstering forward-looking research in space computing power technology and fostering its industrial growth. Space computing power refers to the deployment of computing hardware, including chips and servers, on space satellites to facilitate on-orbit data processing. This approach offers distinct advantages in terms of 'real-time performance' and 'geographical coverage'. It is projected that by 2030, the global market size of the space economy will surpass USD 1 trillion, with space computing power emerging as a pivotal infrastructure component. Presently, the domestic industry is actively engaged in constructing larger-scale computing constellations and addressing core technological challenges. In April of this year, a space computing power innovation center, involving multiple stakeholders from industry, academia, and research sectors, was established in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area. This center unveiled a 'List of Key Common Technology Challenges for Space Computing Power,' focusing on core areas such as reusable rockets, space photovoltaics, laser communication, and radiation-resistant chips. Funding for individual projects under this initiative can reach up to RMB 10 million.
