Zhejiang Unicom has released an official notice stating that, effective June 15, 2026, the 3G network operated by Unicom in Zhejiang Province will undergo complete decommissioning. Consequently, devices, service plans, and SIM cards that are exclusively compatible with 3G technology will no longer support voice calling or internet access. Presently, Zhejiang Unicom's 4G and 5G networks have achieved comprehensive coverage across the region, offering a viable alternative to the 3G network and facilitating user upgrades. China initiated the process of phasing out 2G and 3G networks several years ago. Despite generating considerable debate in its initial stages, the transition has seen most user-friendly phones for the elderly upgraded, thereby mitigating the impact of the network retirement. The decommissioning of 2G and 3G networks contributes to reducing network operational expenses, enhancing operational efficiency, streamlining mobile phone design, boosting performance, and lowering terminal costs.
