Microsoft is accelerating the phase-out of SMS verification code authentication and promoting 'passwordless login' within the Windows 11 ecosystem, utilizing passkeys, authenticator apps, and backup email addresses to ensure the security of personal Microsoft accounts. Microsoft confirmed to the media that it will no longer send SMS verification codes to personal accounts, with this adjustment covering both two-factor authentication and account recovery processes. Support documentation updated earlier this year already indicated that Microsoft is gradually discontinuing the use of SMS as a method for identity verification and account recovery for personal accounts.
