Nevada Energy recently notified Liberty Utilities, a small California-based utility company, that it will cease supplying power to approximately 49,000 customers in the Lake Tahoe region after May 2027, as it needs to reserve power capacity for rapidly expanding data centers. Northern Nevada has become one of the fastest-growing data center corridors in the United States, with Google, Apple, and Microsoft all establishing facilities there. About 75% of Liberty Utilities' power comes from Nevada Energy, and after losing this supply, it will need to find a new power source within just over a year. This power supply crisis highlights the conflict between data center expansion and residential electricity usage.
