According to a report from New York Focus, a U.S. investigative media outlet, the expansion of JPMorgan Chase’s data center in Orangeburg, New York, has been granted nearly $77 million in tax relief by local authorities. However, this substantial financial incentive is projected to result in the creation of just one permanent job, sparking widespread controversy. The project, which involves an investment of roughly $1 billion, benefits from subsidies that cover nearly 8% of its total costs through sales tax exemptions. Prior to this, the project had already received $35 million in tax incentives, yet currently employs only 25 permanent staff on-site. While local authorities maintain that the project will ultimately yield economic returns, the public is expressing dissatisfaction over what they perceive as an absurd imbalance between the scale of subsidies and the minimal job creation.
