In a bid to counteract the spiraling energy costs precipitated by the conflict in Iran, the European Commission rolled out the 'Accelerate EU' strategy on April 22, 2026. This initiative is designed to mitigate the fuel cost emergency stemming from interruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. It will achieve this by tapping into strategic reserves, synchronizing natural gas procurement efforts, and enacting reductions in electricity taxes. Presently, the EU has witnessed a 48% hike in natural gas prices and a 41% increase in crude oil costs. Moreover, there are looming concerns over potential shortages of aviation fuel, compounded by critically low levels of natural gas stockpiles.
